faqs - ULTI-PRO® 100 processing aid

What is ULTI-PRO 100 additive?
It is a reactive viscosity modifier for difficult-to-process rubber compounds.

What are the benefits of ULTI-PRO 100 additive?
It significantly lowers uncured compound viscosity, while increasing hardness and dynamic stiffness, without negatively affecting hysteresis or other physical properties.

In what kind of compounds can ULTI-PRO 100 additive be used?
It can be used in almost any compound. However, it is an amine and consideration should be given to compatibility with cords and fabrics. On the other hand, it is an aromatic amine; therefore, compatibility should be less of an issue.

How much ULTI-PRO 100 additive should be used in a rubber compound?
The amount used depends on the viscosity reduction desired. We have seen excellent results using 3 parts of ULTI-PRO 100 additive with 1 part of HMTA (or with 0.75-3 parts of HMMM). Depending on the rubber formulation, using more than three parts of ULTI-PRO 100 additive may cause bloom. Keep in mind this material will lower the compound's uncured viscosity, while increasing the cured stiffness, without increasing hysteresis. To maximize the viscosity reduction with ULTI-PRO 100 additive, it should be added in as late a mix stage as possible. Because of its low softening point (80ºC) it can be added in the final mix stage.

Since it is an amine, can it cause damage by migrating to polyester or brass-plated steel over time?
When used with a methylene donor, ULTI-PRO 100 additive reacts to form a fully crosslinked, thermoset resin. As such, it should not migrate.

Must ULTI-PRO 100 additive be used with a methylene donor?
It must be used with a methylene donor to realize all of the benefits it can offer. It can be used with any of the common methylene donors such as HMMM (hexamethoxymethylmelamine) or HMTA (hexamethylenetetramine) or other less common ones.

How much methylene donor does ULTI-PRO 100 additive require?
In order to achieve the optimum in properties, one should use a 75/25 ULTI-PRO 100 additive/HMTA ratio. Because of the nature of HMMM, the optimum ratio of ULTI-PRO 100 additive to HMMM varies. A 50/50 ULTI-PRO 100 additive/HMMM ratio will maximize cured stiffness. An 80/20 ULTI-PRO 100 additive/HMMM ratio will minimize high strain hysteresis while still achieving good cured stiffness. For most applications a 50/50 ULTI-PRO additive/ HMMM ratio works best. Depending upon the application, other ratios may be suitable.

Is ULTI-PRO 100 additive a substitute for any other material?
We are not aware of any material in the marketplace that provides for a reduction in uncured viscosity while increasing the cured stiffness other than ULTI-PRO 100 additive. As a viscosity modifier, it can be used to replace liquid rubbers, fatty acid (and other) processing aids, and oils, but with an improvement in cured rubber properties. Because of the good cured stiffness it builds, ULTI-PRO 100 additive can also be used as a partial replacement for phenolic reinforcing resins, but without contributing to the green compound boardiness typical with phenolic resin use.
